What is woodcut style ?
Wood cut style tattoos is a style in which the artist draws inspiration from historical printmaking techniques such as engraving, copper etching and block printing.
This creates a timeless and gothic aesthetic into modern body art. The style is defined by black line work, cross hatching and intentional use of negative space to create dimension. Some artists will also incorporate subtle shading to create more depth .
Does it age well ?
Yes ! With the correct technique, and design this tattoo style will age fantastically, as bold line work tattoos tend to hold up the best over time (bold will hold). It is important that you choose an artist who specialises in this style, as they will take into consideration:
That the lines aren't too close together
Skilled line work (as there is zero room to hide. Any blowouts or shoddy line work will stick out)
Over time, ALL tattoos with spread and become less defined, as they settle into the skin. As the years pass you may lose texture if the artist has placed the lines are too close.
What should I do for aftercare?
You’ll receive a scroll of healing (aftercare instructions) upon completion. It contains the following instructions:
leave the cling film on for a minimum of 1 hour, but no longer than 4 or 5 hours. Best keep it on just before you jump into the shower.
Remove the cling film - wash thoroughly with hot water (no soap for the first wash). This is best done in a clean shower.
After cleaning, Pat dry with a clean paper towel. (For the first night, don’t put any cream on to your tattoo, and before bed, re-wrap your tattoo with clean cling film).
The next morning, take-off the cling film again and have a shower first thing. Make sure you get all off the plasma (the slimy stuff) off the tattoo and use a gentle antibacterial wash.
Pat dry with clean paper towel, and use a thin layer of aftercare cream of choice (Hustle Butter, Bepanthan, etc.).
keep repeating this process for one to two weeks, making sure to wash your tattoo once or twice a day. Limit your showers to 10 minutes, or less.
